Some Plain Talk about Getting Advice from Within Your Church Organization VS. Advice from Outside Your Church Organization
The weekly staff meeting is over.
Most of your staff members have left to go home.
You sit back to ask your most trusted staff member to sit across from your desk. Something in your spirit has been compelling you to share what you really feel.
Your spirit is grieved about the way you as Head Pastor are being treated.
Your trusted staff member sits down to really listen.
You know he really means it when he gives you his most attentive look of concern as you share the same pains you feel in your ministry, for which you need prayer and advice.
His responses and suggestions are safe sounding. He offers up some advice that may help you feel better about the situation. But, he is powerless to really change your situation in the church, because he is following his job limits.
He can’t affect the real change that is needed, can he?
Experience as a young ARMY Barracks Pastor and Administrative Aid to a Pastor
I started in the US ARMY as a voluntary assistant to the Post Chaplain, while stationed for a year in my advanced technical training school after Basic Training. He assigned me the duty of reaching the lost soldiers in the Barracks who wouldn’t think of going to Chapel Sunday Service.
He mentored me and had me pastor underneath him for a barracks church by a young soldier-for young soldiers. That was one of the most exciting years of my life. I went on to become a Squadron single soldier’s representative and counselor & as the barracks Sergeant, became a counselor for soldiers going through divorce.
But as far as my experience helping a pastor through Administrative issues I served that mission during my position as the Administrative Aid to the Senior Pastor of the Vineyard Church in Orlando, Florida—and later as a director of Home groups.
I know that you struggle as the senior pastor. I know that you really depend on God to help you achieve His goals for your ministry. But still…
You lay awake at night worrying at God when you should trust Him to fill your seats and pews with ample giving members of the body of Christ. You have a nagging feeling that the less respect you receive from your congregation and staff somehow is connected to the drop in offerings.
A former Administrative Aid for a Pastor can provide much better advice to worried senior pastors from outside the inner workings of his church. I no longer have to try to see solutions within present limiting policies.
I am about pastors! As I said before, I stand for pastor empowerment. Collaboration and teamwork done with all the pastors I have worked for has been rewarding on an unmatched level mostly because I love catching their passion and vision. My guilty pleasure is found in opening up the Bible with pastors on a multilevel basis, theologically, hermeneutics, and feasting on the original word studies and meaning of the text, YES!
God has called me to be a watchman on the wall for the whole body of Christ in the eschaton – these end times. The church needs spiritually healthy pastors and other church leaders who can unite in the core fundamentals of the faith. These pastors need organizational systems that can help them band together in spiritual strength, while pulling down 5th column infiltration of the church that only want to pull down strong church leadership.
I stand for pastor protection from political assassination due to the LGBT radical onslaught that is hitting our nation, and targeting for moral downfall by Satanic Covens and the like. I stay awake at night thinking up ways to support your emotional and financial well-being so that your church can grow healthier.
Revitalize your church as a spiritually mature force for revival and salvation for our Lord Jesus, Christ. We can feel in our spirit that Jesus’ Kingdom is coming as the bridegroom, and lion of the Tribe of Judah.
Why am I publishing this information?
Finally, be all the leader God made you to be! Instead of the under-appreciated… Over worked… And sadly, over criticized pastor that you felt like deep down inside.
Pastors need the encouragement and support of other pastors that are with them in the trenches.
My goal is to use this site as it flourishes as a place of unity around a CORE founded on Ephesians 4:16, and John 13:35. Pastors thrive in their own coalitions.
That kind of coalition can bring about the heart of God to spiritually strengthen/prepare pastors everywhere. These can be made at the local, regional, and international level.
That is Pastor Planet’s mission!
Such a coalition could greatly help to quickly strengthen each other. Remember, there were many shepherds in the fields in a “Bethlehem Coalition” that night the angel heralded the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ!
They worked together to best shepherd their individual sheepfolds.
With a forum set for the future of the Pastor Planet site that can be all your own, the whole coalition of pastors can be used of God together, just like in Bethlehem.
I am James Hess, founder of Contend Faith ministries, and this site is the first step toward a first 24-7 Fast Contender’s Pastor Hotline: The only place where pastors join ranks as battle hardened Allies in the Wolf in Sheep Skins Armageddon.
This is more than just a Free Report for pastors. It is a CORE Constitution of a Place Just for pastors. The CORE of Good Shepherds is THE GOOD SHEPHERD, Jesus Christ!
Under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul links the commission of Pastors with the mission to mature the rest of the flock of Jesus with unity of the Faith in Ephesians 4:1-16.
That is why it is my mission to help all pastors in the faith to lovingly help each other. That unity can only be achieved when we all center on the core essentials. I speak of the core essentials of Theology and Christ-ology, while turning to the scriptures for greater clarity and unity of faith around non-essentials. Those non-essentials are the subjects that do not change the true gospel and the faith, once delivered to the saints.
As we live out John 13:35; By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another—We MUST earnestly contend for the faith. When that is walked out in faith we will also unite around the true gospel (a declaration of gospel truth over cults and those contentions that divide us).
I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.“
“Rod & Staff” Pastoral Policies
Grab powerful policies that are needed by both denominational, AND non-denomination pastors. These policies benefit both you as the pastor, and your group leaders. These group leaders are pivotal for reporting to you after every small group meeting to department directors.
Next, your department directors must soon thereafter report directly to you, the Senior Pastor. Focus only on the matters of disruptive influences that threaten to tear apart the authority of the core essentials of Christian faith and unity in Christ.
Don’t get alarmed about this strategy. These are NOT “Draconian Big Brother” tactics. It is the serious warning of Jesus to watch for wolves in sheep’s clothing. You must heed his commandment to love one another in the faith as well.
Also, you are NOT building an Elitist Country Club contrary to the message of the Book of James. You control an Elite team of Godly professionals who can best serve the needs of helping you feed Jesus’ sheep.
I will give you the 10 MOST Critical Strategies of Godly Transformation for non-denominational pastors after I report to you the reasons you must start praying for God’s protection and wisdom for how you can stand in your faith to protect your church, pastorate, and family life.
As God’s faithful good shepherd you are in Satan’s Cross-Hairs now more than ever!
What every non-denominational pastor ought to know about protecting his flock from an Absalom or Jezebel
The statistics for pastor dis-empowerment and church splits continue at the alarming rate in which they are trending right now. In David A. Roozen and Adair T Lummis of the Hartford Institutes for Religion Research Hartford Seminary’s exploratory study: “Congregational Splits & Denominational Apostasy”drawn from the FACT 2005 national survey of congregations, resulting in 884 usable questionnaires:
- In the South, there was a 60% church split ratio
- Protestants had an 88% church split ratio
- Rural locations had an 11% church split ratio
- Big City had 64% church split ratio.
The report is very telling. This was just some of the data. You must not think yourself immune. Jesus and Paul talk about a “falling away” of the church.
Unfortunately, much of the church will be weakened and unprepared for the wave of ungodly persecution from the radical homosexual and anti-Christian agenda to destroy the influence of Jesus on this world.
And, I am not talking about those Christians who stand for Jesus’ holiness by confronting a brother or sister in the Lord who is in outright sin, while following the prescribed process of bringing it to the attention of church leadership.
I list them here because it is important to know that they are vital for keeping our churches holy, while seeing that sinful conflict and contentions must be stopped as they do not follow God’s mandate.
Sufficient for such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the majority, so that on the contrary you should rather forgive and comfort him, otherwise such a one might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. Wherefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him.
These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority Let no one disregard you.
If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of that person and do not associate with him, so that he will be put to shame.
‘I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false;
“If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. “But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED. “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
This testimony is true. For this reason reprove them severely so that they may be sound in the faith,
Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
But those who are outside, God judges. REMOVE THE WICKED MAN FROM AMONG YOURSELVES.
Can you relate to being?
2. Under Supported
3. Under Appreciated
4. Under funded by plummeting giving
… Even plotted against — despite all the prayerful caring you have done for your flock?
To be sure there is some spiritual attack at work in all of this.
It is OK to be angry enough to do spiritual warfare in accordance with 2 Corinthians 10:4 and Ephesians 6 in order to gain victory in the name of Jesus Christ over any spiritual attack leveled against you for who you are in the Kingdom of God.
When wave after wave of plights and misfortunes hit your ministry and family you get that sinking feeling that the enemy is steamrolling an attack after the pattern of Jessabelle on the Northern Kingdom, or Absalom on King David’s kingship. Satan’s purpose for those attacks is to discourage any desire to undertake God’s call for revival fires to spark again through your ministry.
I want to encourage pastors that serve both Christ and the body of Christ to grow the kingdom of God and have a stable organization that is a hard-nosed means of solid accountability, because I have seen too many pastors brought down by:
1. Lack of accountability
2. Lack of respect due the office
3. Coup de ta by Leaders under the pastor
I want you to be confident that you can grow your active membership in your church that will help fund your campaign to locate, sift, and select only the best administrative professionals who will have your back and warn you of any Jezebels and/or Absaloms that may have “crept in unawares.”
Here’s where I learned all about how disloyal leaders under the senior pastor can, and sometimes do work to undermine the authority of the senior pastor. They do such things in order to rend control and preeminence from their pastor. No restraints are held in order to topple the authority and credibility of a pastor.
Back when I was a young, single soldier in the US ARMY (after y year as a barracks pastor), I found a wonderful family to adopt me. The family was a loving church in Colorado Springs, Colorado (I am withholding the name of the church to protect the senior pastor who was betrayed).
They really took me in and became a place of friendship, faith, and family when I was most feeling alone—on my own for the first time.
One of the great things that the church did after praise and worship was to allow the Holy Spirit to allow… in an orderly fashion… the reading of scripture, praising the name of Jesus, praise reports, and encouragement for the whole congregation.
Many scriptures were read aloud in the church by upstanding members of the congregation. But, for this son of the living God the Holy Spirit drove me to read from only one passage of scripture each time I was impressed to stand up to read.
The passage of scripture was Ephesians 4:11-16 concerning the body of Christ and the unity of the faith (not to be confused with ecumenical-ism).
The sad part of this story is that soon after I left to move back to my hometown after my Honorable Discharge from the US ARMY… I received word that the church split. There was an inside job at work within the leadership of the church.
When a church split occurs many Christians are hurt… sometimes they are hurt in a HUGE way. I want to respect their feelings and stories by giving only the most necessary of information on this church tragedy.
However, as the church split due to the aftershocks of the verbal attack on the pastor many members of the church left disgusted.
Many Christians leave the faith when disloyalty and sin within church leadership come to light.
It is very important that these terrible consequences can all probably avoided… Do not offend the little ones. Jesus knows what is better. Please take the possibility of the same cataclysm poisoning your ministry from within your own board, or associate leadership.
If you have that sinking feeling, then this site is for you.
Further still, this site is for the pastor who feels “cuckoo” from pastor burnout. The pastors I have counseled have expressed to me their bewilderment and dismay about their congregation and staff that feel no remorse for projecting unreal expectations on them as their pastoral leader.
The thing that feels “cuckoo” about it all is that they had the sinking and dis-empowering feeling that at any moment they could be in their Cross-hairs for extreme Blame and Rebellion.
Discover 10 critical secrets of Godly Successful Pastors. Learn these secrets to launch your ministry into revival status.
Now just Imagine waking up respected face to face, AND while you have your back turned. Imagine your ministry and family life under the full control of the Holy Spirit of peace.
Imagine your life full of God’s Romans 6:14 blessed control over sin in your church–“not being under law but grace.” I’m talking about God’s kind of “Dunamis” grace here.
It all ties into 2nd Corinthians 12:9 (His grace is sufficient for thee: His strength is made perfect in weakness, and you CAN glory in your infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon you), and Ephesians 3:7
Plus, pastors of Jesus’ BIG & BOLD Sheepfold that are well supported are well respected.
My pastor, Dan Mullins is a great success story. I love to share with others the way that he mentored me when he was my associate pastor.
He had confidence in my abilities and was always trying to help me mentor someone, while he mentored me. He was the man who helped me become the Administrative Aid at the church he was pastoring as the associate pastor. When our church split he prayerfully stepped up to the plate took the reins of the pastorate after the senior pastor had to leave.
Pastor Dan Mullins has been leading our church in spiritual victory, from glory to glory all while still holding down a full time job as a High School principle.
Dan Mullins truly is one of my heroes. He always gets back to me even during the busiest of times for him and his schedule. He leads like a General, always ready for better organization and taking care of people in and outside of his church, which grows organically from the feeling of family that he inspires throughout the congregation.
You as a pastor are also a General working tirelessly for Jesus AND you are one of His shepherds that always lead from the front lines in both the pulpit and the ministry at large. That kind of commitment keeps you busy.
You are always tending the wounds of your flock. Their wounds sometimes do not leave any visible scars, but often when a pastor is scarred in the ministry the effects are VERY visible… It leaves you feeling dis-empowered by those whom you care deeply.
The hectic schedule and lack of support cause you to take on more than you are supposed to handle and leaves you feeling like there is no time to go out and find the right organizational structure to support you.
You were trained to understand the word of God, while communicating it clearly to your congregation. But how much administrative, financial, and leadership training have you really undertaken?
There is hope for renewed respect and proper empowerment!
I know, because I have worked closely with pastors for the majority of 16 years as a volunteer Chaplain’s aid, professional church administrator, and home group director and leader. Each pastor I worked with felt the pain of leading people that were bench warmers who were takers, not givers.
Here’s a clue: The answer is not guilt-ing them into a more stringent service ethic.
The greatest desire of a Loving Pastor
What is possible?
A spiritually and theologically healthy body of church members is your goal. You deeply desire to pastor sophisticated and spiritually mature parishioners who are willing to be equipped for the ‘Great Commission’ and to be conformed to the image of Christ Jesus.
But still, you feel that a lack of growth in your church is a pejorative, almost disgraceful problem to wake up to.
Welcome to ‘Pastor Planet’…The Pastor’s planet God creates to lead you to His Green Meadow.
Certainly in the shepherd’s meadows in Jesus’ day the owner of the sheep herd did not want to have the size of the herd stagnate. PastorPlanet.com is a shepherd’s meadow for all pastors. In this meadow I am excited to share the story of pastoral confidence, because it empowers you, the pastor of His flock.
You know that the purpose of that confidence is “for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. Till we all come in the unity of the faith…”
Church growth doesn’t happen accidentally, church growth happens when healthy holy men of God truly want to shepherd God’s people-exactly the way Jesus DOES.
You do that by leading your flock to first love one another, disciple one another, become doctrinally disciplined, share and spread the love to those they care about.
What is the point of having a growing ministry? The point is not the glory and wealth of any pastor, but the fulfillment of God’s glory and the spreading of the gospel of Jesus Christ to win souls.
I have 3 messages for you:
1. You can be strong in the Lord and prevent disloyalty
2. Best protect your flock and your personal ministry by contending for the faith when it comes to the infiltration of deceptive heresies.
3. “Put on the whole armor of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
Discover the Biblical formula for preventing church splits without falsely accusing or offending anyone.
Wake Up Respected!
It is not difficult when you know the mindset and action steps that are critical to administrative and pastoral success—some are unusual for the simple fact that they contradict the norm of mediocrity. Simply, they are bold actions that force your congregation to think. They are:
1. Pastoral Success Mindset: Honest with God and with Accountability Leadership…Everything Exposed to the Light of Jesus, Galatians 6:1-5, James 5:16, and Luke 17:3
2. Pastoral Success Mindset: Set No Wicked Thing before Your Eyes
3. Pastoral Success Mindset: Take No Part in the Devil’s Schemes, But Rather Reprove them, Ephesians 5:11.
4. Pastoral Success Mindset: Be Not Doomed to Repeat Tragic Moral Failure of other Godly Leaders because of Knowing the Biblical Past and the Shock Waves throughout History. No idols that other pastors have erected, such as a success first mentality, etc.
a. Make sure your personal life accurately matches your public pastoral image that you present to your congregation so that the same humble attitude that God gave you to begin your ministry is the same now and forever
5. Pastoral Success Mindset: Know What God Wants for the Congregation and tell it in a way that the Congregation Will Want to Take Hold… But never back down from connecting it with our Moral Conviction against Sin.
6. Pastoral Success Task: Understand Occult History almost as much as you understand Church History
7. Pastoral Success Task: Get to know each home group and their members
8. Pastoral Success Task: Ask the current leaders you have above and below you for references to discover their spiritual/emotional, demographic, and psychographic minds and lives. Ask them for referrals and create a candidate generating ad in a Christian Business Magazine. You may take these data points to an Executive Recruiter to find the right staff and church directors. I teach you how to easily add these people to your leadership team. You will have quick and easy templates and instruction on finding the right people to lead your group and vet out immoral candidates in my program. Encourage these highly responsible and mature directors and leaders to share the benefits and family quality environment of your church to attract like-minded church members seeking the same revival transformation for the kingdom of God as you.
9. Pastoral Success Task: Really Investigate the Moral and Global governmental/Religious work of the enemy as it relates to theology, Christology, Prophecy, and Eschatology, etc. —
a. Certainly teach your favored view on these doctrines, but also discuss and fully explain the full explanation and pros and cons of all viewpoints of these doctrines.
b. Also, take a long hard look at Genesis 3, and Genesis 6 and see if there is a connection and do not just pass off the possibility of there being more to the story than kissing cousins that are unequally yoked producing giant offspring.
c. Here’s the kicker: In your congregation there is at least one person that reads the Bible for themselves and may even get into original word studies who has an opinion about these controversial topics in the Bible and you need to give their side of the story with respect as well so that they do not take over their home group with arguments you do not agree with. Before Absalom took over the kingdom, David, his father dismissed him out of hand.
10. Pastoral Success Task: Implore your congregation on the Incredible Benefits of Cutting out worldly T.V. time with the replacement of Bible Reading and Christlike-ness development reading materials. You will see the night and day difference this produces in your congregation when they follow through with this challenge.
Here’s a BONUS: DO try to make the people in your Staff and Congregation into Family with you and your family… It will create a church corporate culture of family… and that is what most good honest people want in a church when they are looking for a church. It will catch on. Your congregation will share how they feel about their new family (your church) and those friends will be turned on to the possibility of joining such a cool church that they can’t wait till Sunday… or Saturday if you are a 7th Day Adventist Pastor.
No Ears Tickled Round Here!
Church members hunger and thirst for more of God in their lives. They want the meat of the gospel from the word of God. That is the case of course as long as they have truly accepted Jesus into their heart as their Lord and Savior. I would think that you would expect no less than the same from me.
Here is my commitment to you as a counselor and encourager to you as you navigate the course that God placed before you. God prearranged for you to be a pastor and will help you through the work of the Holy Spirit to feed and lead his sheep as representatives of the gospel.
I will to the best of my ability with the help of the Holy Spirit keep every bit of advice and counsel tied directly to the word of God. Jesus said that scripture can’t be broken (John 10:35) and I definitely do not want to try him on that point.
I will give you the truth of Jesus and NOT just tell you what you want to hear. Because you are God’s humble servant you deserve the truth.
I love being there for pastors and I know that there are many pressures that you face and are a target for the enemy and need to be “renewed in the spirit of your mind” Ephesians 4:23
You are the fighter that gets knocked down, and stands back up to win the next round! Romans 8:37 is a promise of God. “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
You are not your challenges and failures, in Jesus.
In Him you have your new life and victory that is his victory over sin and death. He provides our victory over every challenge.
Jesus’ grace will empower you, encourage you, strengthen you, and see that your victory will be through the power of God… that is the victory of Calvary in your life.
But, if you are here looking for ways to twist scripture to your own profit, manipulate and control your congregation to get them to tithe you rich, then this is not the place to spend another minute. Don’t waste your time here. Look, up and to the left is the back button.
You are still here. Good!
You do NOT have to compromise your preaching
Your heart and spirit may have been wounded in your past with devastating effects as Proverbs 18:14 and Psalms 109:22 can attest to but as Romans 8:15 states, “we have not received the spirit of bondage to fear.” Your fear may be loss of ability to cover church expenses, provide for your family, or even the fear of an Absalom in your midst. But… As the verse in Romans continues to promise, “ye have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”
Let’s get started. Shall we?
I say again, you do NOT have to compromise your preaching to get TONS of people through TRUTH in LOVE. Like wedding engagements – Hopefully, it is truth in the spirit of love.
Spiritually Healthy pastors inspire
Healthy relationships beget greater – healthier relationships.
You want your church – NOT Be the victim of a cancerous church split.
My first ministry was to help heal broken marriages. God made me a marriage mentor who is now compelled to prepare the bride of Christ. If betrayal and backstabbing (could/did) happen to Jesus Christ… it will happen to at least 97% of pastors… It could happen to you!
God will help you be More Than a Conquer
Pastors who fail to plan for these dangers plan on NOT taking responsibility for the calling God has placed on your life. It is planning to fail. That is why I called this Pastor’s planet Pastor Plan It!
If you are unfortunate enough to have serious injury come to you and your church through the efforts of a Jessabelle, or a Absalom, then pray for God’s grace that you will forgive them and continue in God’s grace, lest a “root of bitterness spring up in you” as Hebrews 12:15 warns so that you be not “defiled.”
Also, I am dedicated to helping you learn how to put these biblical principals to work in your pastoral organization. In order to better serve your congregational needs you will have to have a successful organization set up already. It will be needed by you in order to best serve and build up the church member relationships that need biblically based preservation. This is what ContendFaith ministries and PastorPlanet.org are all about.
Over the 16 years of my adult ministry for Jesus within His church I have focused my talents and time helping pastors in their calling to feed His sheep with the equipping they need to carry on the great call you have been called to fulfill per Ephesians 4:11-16.
I pray that God will bless you through the stories, blog posts, reports, and products created specifically to meet you pastoral based needs and to help you sleep better at night so that you have the kind of church that blesses you instead of emotionally draining you.
