Define theology? How would define it you ask? A better question is, “How would Jesus… define theology?”
It’s a good question.
I often search the “red letters” in God’s word wondering, “How will Jesus’ theology shape our lives?”
What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” [A. W. Tozer, The Knowledge of the Holy].
True and Accurate Theology
It is the Great Perspective we must adopt concerning the vast difference between God and man.
A true theological perspective always changes our view-point concerning our uniqueness and importance in God’s plan, for the better!
The universe was created by and through Jesus.
He made us in the image of the Triune God. We were made for His good pleasure. Colossians 4:16, Ephesians 2:10, and Revelations 4:11 always makes me thank God and give Him all the credit for my existence.
Pastors, Preachers, & Teachers: All the answers to everything we will ever need to know can be found in God’s Word
We base our worldview interpretations according to those truths.
Since we affirm together that in every aspect of being (Ontology) that is Holy, Righteous, Pure, Just, and True — We affirm that God alone is the Ultimate and Superlative! In ALL these good things He is infinite and Inscrutable! United in our common faith, these are the maxims we hold together.
Yea! Further still, in our common faith we must stand together each with our swords (the word of God) for our common spiritual warfare against a spiritual enemy (Ephesians 6:12-20).
God’s living, sharp, and inerrant doctrinal truth found in His Holy Inspired Scriptures cut to the very heart of the people you are reaching. Remember Hebrews 4:12?
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
Ask Jesus to make His true truth more real to you.
Confidently grapple with the word of truth found by asking, “How would Jesus define theology?”
“All you need to do is ask in prayer with the right heart,” can be the summation of all the wisdom Jesus taught.
I remember once when I was a young teenager asking God to make transcendent truths found in theology somehow more understandable to me.
I venture to guess that Jesus will not withhold the outpouring of such wisdom on His pastors.
Pray for the spiritual ability to rightly handle God’s truth to become something that you can figuratively “hold on to.” Doing so will provide you with the best tool of all in your parson’s bag.
Preach with fervor in order to drop sinners to their knees. God uses His word as a delicate demolition set explosive that is good for “tearing down strongholds” right and left.
Also, the word of God is the kind of mighty sword that can gently spear a rocky heart. God promised that His word would Not return void and your preaching can be a transmitter as such. It is in this way that you are guaranteed to get to the soft, and contrite center of each and every one of your congregation with every sermon.
The following MUST be taught and made mention of in your sermons.
The Theology of :
- The Aseity of God
- The Spirituality of God
- The Sovereignty of God
- The Holiness of God
- The Omnis of God
- The Immutability of God
- The Truthfulness of God
- The Wisdom of God
- The Goodness of God
- The Grace of God, that Jesus fulfilled as our Free Gift of salvation from our sins… Of which, were started in the Garden of Eden.
- The Love of God
- The Foreknowledge of God
- The Wrath of God
Those are just the theology/character aspects of the infinite God we worship. You can discover much of the character aspects of God from the classic work by Author Pink, “The Attributes of God.” I found the title at Ligonier.org.
Also, I could mention the doctrine of the Holy Trinity, Creation, In-error-ency of scripture, the law of Non-contradiction, Eschatology, & the Perussia… and much much more.
Jesus sums it all up when he tells us in John that he and the Father are one and they send the Holy Spirit as our Helper & that we must take up our Cross and daily follow Him.
That is all how Jesus would define theology. Preach it all passionately to your flock!
Check out my old pastor, Dr. Larry Siekewitch’s Theology 101 course teaching from his church pulpit. Dr. Siekewitch is the Sr. Pastor of Harvest Fellowship in Sauk Rapids, MN.
I intensely appreciate his teaching because he wisely states that Theology can only properly be done WITH God, and that systematic theology is only as good as it fully integrates EVERYTHING in the Bible. It should not force the Bible to fit with it’s own system. Enjoy the whole series!
